Community College. I’m interested in welding, math, choir
and track. Thank you for taking an interest in my future and making
college a possibility for me.”

The stuff miracles are made of
In April of 2001, Bernice Ingalls Staton pledged $2 million to
Lane to establish scholarships for students of need and merit. The
gift is one of the two largest gifts of any kind ever made to the
Foundation.
Bernice Ingalls Staton moved to Eugene from North Dakota with her
family when she was a little girl. She and her husband met as teenagers
and attended the University of Oregon in the depth of the Great
Depression, but Bernice couldn’t afford to finish college.
That’s why she wants to help others get an education.
“I think education is terribly important, and I think that
having this opportunity to go to college will change students’
lives and the lives of the families they will have. I want to help
students who absolutely could not go to school without aid.”
Bernice said.
Bernice wanted to help students pursuing professional or technical
education as well as those pursuing a four-year degree. As a result
of Bernice’s generosity, students seeking two-year
degrees are awarded $5,000 vocational scholarships, and some students
who plan to transfer to the UO receive the same amount in collegiate
transfer scholarships.
