Project Plans - Underprepared Students

Objective 5: Underprepared Students

Lane will create or expand learning-centered programs and strategies to ensure the success of underprepared students

1. Outcome: Lane will address the fragmentation of programs and services available to the underprepared learner.

Activities:
1a. Identify the stakeholders who serve underprepared students.
Timeline: Completed Spring 2001
Facilitators: Objective Five Team: Adrian Rodriguez & Beth Frye

Activities:
1b. Define who the underprepared students are at Lane.
Timeline: Fall 2000 Completed Fall 2000
Facilitators: Beth Frye with college wide committee on Underprepared Learner

Activities:
1c. Discuss need for renaming term “underprepared.”
Timeline: Fall 2000 Completed Fall 2000
Facilitators: Beth Frye with Underprepared Learner Committee

Activities:
1d. Address fragmentation through college restructuring
Timeline: Academic year 2000-2001 Completed Fall 2002
Facilitators: Beth Frye with department representatives from affected areas of reorganization and other partners

2. Outcome: Lane will conduct  assessments of their current programs for underprepared students to determine student success rates, program strengths, and program weaknesses.

Activities: 
2a. Continue assessments for Guided Studies, Core College Connections, and Math 10.
Timeline: Academic year 2000-2001 ongoing
Facilitators: Beth Frye with Research & Planning and Guided Studies Counselors

Activities: 
2b. Identify other programs/ courses to assess.
Timeline: Winter 2001
Facilitators: Beth Frye with focus group from Underprepared Learner committee

Activities: 
2c. Work with Research and Planning to develop qualitative assessments.
Timeline: Fall & Winter 2001
Facilitators: Adrian Rodriguez with focus group from Underprepared Learner committee

Activities: 
2d. Examine placements of underprepared students to determine appropriateness.
Timeline: Winter & Spring 2001 ongoing
Facilitators: Adrian Rodriguez with faculty and other staff working with underprepared students

3. Outcome: Lane will create programs of assessment, academic advising, and orientation that will ensure underprepared students are placed in opportunities where they can succeed.

Activities:
3a. Accept invitation for a team to visit the Community College of Denver.
Timeline: Winter 2001 cancelled due to budget considerations

Activities:
3b. Explore use of multiple assessment tools to place underprepared students.
Timeline: Throughout academic year
Facilitators: Adrian Rodriguez with Testing and members from Underprepared Learner committee

4. Outcome: Lane will expand the number of options for learning (lecture, labs, project-based, teams, mentoring, field experience, etc) currently offered to underprepared students.

4a. Identify current options available
Timeline: Fall 2000

4b. Explore learning community option for underprepared students.
Timeline: Pilot Fall 2002 Guided Studies Learning Community
Facilitators: Beth Frye with focus group from above committee

Activities:
4c. Explore time options – summer, weekends, other.
Timeline: Winter 2001
Facilitators: Beth Frye with focus group from above committee

5. Outcome: Lane will design and implement staff development programs for faculty and staff with primary responsibility for underprepared students aimed at increasing student success rates.

Activities:
5a. Define learning-centered.
Timeline: Fall 2000 and Winter 2001
Facilitators: Vanguard team and Underprepared Learner committee

Activities:
5b. Assess training needs to implement learning-centered options.
Timeline: Winter 2001
Facilitators: Beth Frye with Vanguard team and Professional Development.
