Each year, Lane holds a competition to identify projects that embody a spirit of innovation envisioned by past president Eldon F. Schafer. This year for the first time,. the Schafer Innovation Awards were selected in collaboration with the Innovation of the Year, sponsored by The League for Innovation in the Community College. The projects are selected based on the following criteria: effectiveness, efficiency, affordablity, reliability and creativity.

Agricultural Business Management Program
Business Development Center
A program was created to use complementary skills from both the Business Development Center and the OSU Extension Service. Good synergies have created a complete agricultural and business management package that gets input from the seasoned and the new farmers. The program has been so successful that Landscapers are now asking for the same type of program to help them increase their success.

Advanced Technology Division
The program has increased the number of students served, become more flexible and reduced the overhead cost per FTE and the interactive learning process has resulted in creating student-paced, self-directed progression for students at all skill levels with an increased enrollment since implementation of 21%.

Sustainability Infusion Project
This project seeks to provide a mechanism to infuse sustainability across Lane’s entire curriculum and then disseminate this trans-disciplinary educational model to community colleges across the country. This project builds a train the trainer model that allows for a wide spread use at a low cost that eventually results in savings where the application is applied.

ESL Department WIKI
This program increases access for ESL students to computers and the skills needed for the workplace and academic readiness and has created renewed interest in the computer lab and more opportunities for students to work on their skills from home.

The Lane Peace Center
In this second year of existence the Peace Center strives to meet the need to teach peace in a world beset by war, racism, poverty, and environmental destruction. This year’s theme is titled “Peace and Collective Action: Connecting Hope to Change”.

Music Thanatology Training
A new, two year, non-degree program that trains music thanatologists to use music to ease the death and dying process for patients and their families. The program works with certified music-thanatologists, medical doctors, registered nurses, and other professionals and is the first of its kind in the United States.
