For more than 40 years, Lane Community College has been woven into the fabric of Lane County. More than half of Lane County households have had a family member enrolled at the college over the past five years. Over 85 percent of Lane graduates remain in Lane County upon program completion—filling important jobs in health care, law enforcement, emergency medical technology, computer specialties, nursing, and a host of other critically needed occupations that affect our lives every day.
According to the Oregon Employment Department, growth in health care alone will be substantial. As the only provider of nursing education in Lane County, the college needs to graduate more than 1,300 additional nurses by 2014 to meet critical community health care needs. To expand these health care programs, the college must have new facilities and additional faculty to ensure that citizens in Lane County receive the best health care possible.
The Lane Community College Foundation has launched its Opening Doors campaign for this reason. Constructing a new health and wellness building and expanding faculty are two key elements for maintaining our momentum in health care. Fortunately, the State of Oregon is providing $6.75 million toward the cost of a $15 million health care education facility at Lane. We will need to raise the remaining $8.25 million to build the facility and another $3 million to expand the number of faculty for nursing and other health care programs.
