Medical Office Assisting

Medical assistants are multi-skilled health professionals specifically educated to work in ambulatory settings performing administrative and clinical duties. The practice of medical assisting directly influences the public’s health and well-being, and requires a master of complex body of knowledge and specialized skills requiring both formal education and practical experience that serve as standards for entry into the profession.

The Medical Assisting Program at Lane Community College is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP),(www.caahep.org) upon the recommendation of the Medical Assisting Education Review Board (MAERB).  Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs 1361 Park Street   Clearwater,  FL 33756    727/210-2350. The next re-accreditation review and evaluation will occur in the 2015-2016 academic year.

Graduates of this program are eligible to take the national certification examination
(CMA), sponsored by the American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA) and the National Board of Medical Examiners (NBME). Only individuals who hold a certificate from a medical assisting program accredited by CAAHEP are eligible to take the Certification Examination. Certification is not currently required for initial employment by local employers, but is becoming highly recommended within the local medical community.  Medical Office Assistant students at Lane should be planning for certification. Upon passing the Certification Examination, an MOA may claim the credential of CMA (AAMA) for Certified Medical Assistant.

Medical Office Assisting is a rapidly expanding segment of the work force. According to the United States Bureau of Labor statistics, Medical Assisting is projected to be one of the fastest growing professions. A national salary survey done in 2009 by the American Association of Medical Assistants reports the hourly wage range is $12.31 to $16.32, with the average of $14.98.
