Joe Russin I will be working with organizations in Costa Rica and the Willamette Valley on biology projects: specifically ecology, conservation, and field biology. My overall goal is to participate in several field research and conservation projects in these areas, to enhance my professional growth and inform my teaching.
Lynn Tullis I will begin reading, writing, and research during the summer. I will study Arabic and Asian literature and culture by participating in the NEH Summer Institute on Diversity and Debates in contemporary Islam. I will begin with The Thousand and One Nights. Fall term I will study with Maram Epstein, Asian Studies Director at the U of O.
Anne Paschall In order to update to update my own professional accounting skills, I will be working as a project accountant in the offices of several different businesses and attending professional seminars. I will be assessing our LCC accounting program outcomes based on what I observe in the workplace to be sure the outcomes are aligned with what students really need to know. I will also gather material to create more relevant curriculum activities, projects and assignments.
Merrill Watrous I will write a book called Picture Learning to include all that I have learned in the past ten years from both fifth graders and college students about writing and illustrating picture books. I am writing this book for the classroom teacher, and I hope to be able to show my reader how to write a teacher authored model book for a class and a group authored model book with a class. I hope to be able to demonstrate ways to teach students the elements of fiction and of nonfiction through the writing of these books.
Joe Escobar I will becopme proficient in PHP (Hypertext Preprocessor) and MySQL (database) technologies. This will enable me to provide a wide variety of web-database softwate solutions to instructors using PHP and MySQL. This will enable me to make the data in Lane's Banner database helpful and meaningful to instructor's in their daily work.
Julia Munkvold I will use simulated clinical experiences to allow nursing students to learn and practice real-world clinical situations and treatments in nthe LCC Nursing Lab with use of a high-tech simulation mannequin currently in nuse at several other nursing programs in Oregon. I will explore possibilities and realities of LCC joining in the combined statewide nursing education curriculum and programming through the Oregon Nursing consortium developed by Oregon Health Sciences University.
David Leung My intent is to interview and learn from counseling professionals about how they apply psychological theories in real life and with real people: I will attend classes during the Fall and Winter sessions at U of O in psychology and Counseling Psychology/Human Services. I will forward a detailed program of classes to the Sabbatical Committee. I will attend ongoing crisis counseling training while at White Bird Clinic. I will conduct specific research in various campus libraries.
Christina Simoni I will explore the use of visual and kinesthetic strategies for teaching adult learners basic mathematical concepts, particularly fractional notation concepts. The goal is to improve students' understanding of basic math concepts -- using strategies appropriate for the adult learner. I will work with colleagues such as Dawn DeWolf, Patti Jackson, Maureen McGory, John Miller, Penny Deggelman, and other instructors at LCC. I will work with Alice Kaseberg, Audrey Manning, and David Allen and others. Work will be conducted in Eugene, Corvallis, and Portland.
Hyla Rosenberg I will participate in a Spanish language immersion program at Instituto cultural de Oaxaca. I will explore and research globalization and cultural diffusion in Oaxaca, with particular attention paid to exportation of U.S. popular culture. I will interview Alejandro de Avila, chief architect of the McDonald's protests and Dr. Lynn Stephen, U of O professor who was in Oacaca at the time of the protest.
Larry Scott I will devote the leave to researching, studying, and observing practices in different cultures and educational institutions in order to develop a working knowledge of specific methods, techniques and best practices. I will research and read current literature. I will visit and observe experential learning programs in the Philippines and Thailand.
Michael Samano I will be focusing on how individual and institutional spoken and unspoken workload issues may impact the experiences of faculty of color within the academy. I will examine potential individual and institutional workload issues. I will complete a Doctoral Proposal draft, complete a course on ethics, complete the Doctoral Proposal, prepare for a qualifying exam, defend the Doctoral Proposal and portfolio, conduct interviews with five participants in this research, treanscaribe the interviews,..., summarize findings and continue writing and editing the findings.
Matt Luke I intend to write the first half of my dissertation for a Ph.D. working at the U of O library and in cloise contact with my dissertation director, Juan Armando Epple. I want to make a significant contribution to the field of criticism regarding "el micro cuento -- Flash Fiction" in Latin american Lit. I will shift my focus within the field of the short story which will enable me to utilize both photography and pedagogy.
Clifford Guse Expand and enhance my current aviation maintenance knowledge and international communication skills by volunteering with Mission Aviation Fellowship in Lesotho, Africa. I plan to go to MAF headquarters in Redlands, CA and then depart for Africa to relieve the Shutts, a maintenance technician family. Lesotho is about the size of Maryland.
Kendra Gilds I will meet with Stephen Kosslyn (Harvard U), James Hinrichs (U of Iowa), and Tom Mallory (U of Utah) on the subject of cognitive development literature. I will review current college classroom teaching methods. I will discuss instructional issues with seasoned educational professionals such as Ken Kotovsky (Carnegie Mellon), Sarah Grison (Beckman Institute), Fran Friedrich (U of Utah), Craig Stark(John Hopkins), and Tom Spalding (U of ALberta).
Bob Barber My goals for the sabbatical are (1) to investigate theories and models of network communication in organizations and (2) to locate or propose an appropriate agent-based or neutral network-based computational model for organizational communication and decision making. There will be a literature review phase and a software modeling phase.
Tom Rubick I will research the print collection of works by Elmer Jacobs. I will flesh out his biography and investigate his historical significance. I will study the Phoenix Flame and determine if it is representative of in-house publications of that period. I will study the techniques and media used by Jacobs in relation to the printing technology of that time.
Adrienne Mews I plan to translate the novel, Bella y oscura, by Rosa Montero from Spanish into English. I have translated a few excerpts of this novel already and have published two short stories taken from the novel in our own Community College Moment (Winter 2002) and in the Northwest Review (Winter 2004). I plan to submit excerpts of my translation to journals that focus on literary translations.
Sylvie Matalon-Florendo To integrate the language of photography into my work in Spanish language instruction and to increase my cultural competence and understanding of the diversity of the Spanish speaking world. I will increase my photography skills by going on photography treks in Spanish speaking countries. I will apply Mikhail M. Bakhtin's approach to photo and student language learning.
