Popular LCC instructor, counselor dies of cancer at 55

Carol Lynn Morse, a popular instructor and counselor at Lane Community College, died Wednesday from cancer. She was 55.
Morse was well known at Lane and in the counseling community for her work with both students and families in Lane County. She worked for many years with the Center for Family Counseling and ran the popular Saturday Circus program that over the years helped thousands of people improve their parenting skills.
"I think that it would be difficult to find a person who had more energy and devotion and dedication," said John Crumbley, a juvenile counselor and protege of Morse's. "She was an exceptionally loving and caring person, and I think virtually everyone who met her picked up on that."
Morse joined the University of Oregon faculty after earning a doctorate there and joined the LCC faculty in 1978 as a counseling instructor in the continuing education program. She was a licensed and certified counselor and won numerous professional honors, including the Distinguished Service Award from the Oregon Counseling Association in 1993.
But Donna Koechig, vice president for instruction and student services at LCC, noted that Morse refused to hang any of the awards on her office wall.
"What was most important to Carol Lynn was not all the awards that she achieved, but knowing that she had helped people," Koechig wrote in an e-mail to LCC staff announcing Morse's death.
Morse was known as a tireless worker who rarely missed a day of work and as an unflagging advocate for students.
"She always had time for students," Crumbley said.
"She was concerned about them as persons and offered what most people understood as just fantastic guidance. She was above all an extremely encouraging person to everyone she met."
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. May 23 at the Center for Meeting and Learning on the Lane Community College campus. Memorial donations can be made to the Carol Morse Life Work Memorial Fund in care of Musgrove Family Mortuary, 452 Olive St., Eugene 97401. A private family inurnment will be held at Siskiyou Memorial Park in Medford.
Morse was born May 27, 1948, in Lebanon to Almon and Hazel Anthony Morse. She graduated from Lebanon Union High School in 1966 and earned a bachelor's degree in journalism from the University of Oregon in 1970.
She later earned a master's in counseling and a doctorate in counseling psychology from the UO. She also worked as a professor and adviser at the university before joining the LCC faculty in 1978.
She married Myron Pilon in 1979 in Eugene.
Morse was a board member for Head Start of Lane County and Birth to Three and was a past president of the Oregon Counseling Association. She enjoyed travel, writing, family and gardening.
In addition to her husband, Morse is survived by a daughter, Mary Lynn Morse Pilon, and a son, Andrew, both of Eugene; a brother, Larry Morse of Boston; and one grandson.

A memorial service will be held May 23 for Carol Lynn Morse of Eugene, who died April 28 of colon cancer. She was 55.
Morse was born May 27, 1948, in Lebanon to Almon and Hazel Anthony Morse. She married Myron Pilon in Eugene on Dec. 26, 1979.
She lived in Lebanon until 1966, when she settled in Eugene.
She graduated from Lebanon High School in 1966 and received a bachelor's degree in journalism from the University of Oregon in 1970. She later received master's and doctorate degrees in counseling from the UO.
She was a professor and adviser at the UO. She also was a counselor and instructor at Lane Community College.
She served as a board member with Head Start of Lane County and Birth to Three.
She was a past president of the Oregon Counseling Association.
She enjoyed traveling, writing and gardening. She especially enjoyed her family.
Survivors include her husband; a son, Andrew Pilon of Eugene; a daughter, Mary Morse Pilon of Eugene; a brother, Larry Morse of Boston; and one grandchild.
The memorial service will be at 1 p.m. May 23 at Lane Community College Convention Center. Private inurnment will be at Siskiyou Memorial Park in Medford. Musgrove Family Mortuary in Eugene is in charge of arrangements.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Carol Morse Life Work Memorial Fund in care of the funeral home.
