  Reading Courses

Reading 080 is the entry level reading class offered by the Academic Learning Skills Department. Students will learn active reading strategies such as finding main idea and supporting details to improve textbook comprehension. Students will develop techniques for enlarging vocabulary and creating study tools. Brief reading selections from actual first year textbooks used at Lane are part of this course. This course is also offered as part of the Guided Studies Program.

Reading 089 - Academic Reading for ELL Students -- Students will learn active reading strategies such as finding the main idea and supporting details. Students will develop techniques for enlarging their vocabulary and creating study tools. Readings will include both advanced ESL texts as well as short authentic readings. Prerequisite: Placement by reading/writing test and instructor consent. This course is for English Language Learners.

ALS reading studentsReading 090 is the second in the sequence of reading classes offered by the Academic Learning Skills Department. Students will learn to integrate active reading strategies such as finding main idea and supporting details, note taking, and mapping to comprehend longer college level reading selections. Students will learn how to draw thematic connections between a variety of readings.

Reading 093 - ESL: College Reading -- Students will learn reading strategies that will improve comprehension in reading such as reading for main idea, supporting detail, patterns of organization and inference. Students will learn how to draw thematic connections between a variety of readings. The course is designed to improve reading skills of English language learners. Prerequisite: Placement by reading/writing test and instructor consent.
