Balanced Representation
In considering how to utilize technology effectively and appropriately to further the mission of the college, five broadly defined areas of work emerge as those which contain elements requiring coordination. These five areas do NOT represent any existing college organization management structure. Every effort should be made to have a balanced representation on the Technology Advising & Consulting Team (TACT) from the five alignment functions identified in the Technology Planning Work Team Report in the section "The Challenge of Alignment." The following is a brief synopsis of the five functions. Please see the full report for more detail.
- Services to Students
The method, conditions and purposes by and for which students can utilize or access technology resources.
- Curriculum Development
The process by which new subjects and new approaches to learning (using technology) are formally developed.
- Professional Development
The creation of the necessary skills base curricula to teach staff about instructional curriculum, organizational administration and institutional governance using technology.
- Information Systems
Information systems planning and operations (the technology infrastructure).
- Facilities Planning
The physical environment using technology within which all of the above are carried out.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
The ideal member would have experience in technology planning and implementation. In addition, the ideal member would possess all of the following technology skills. The following skills, however, may not be embodied in any one person. The more overlapping skills each member has, the better the understanding of the relationships among the five functions will be. If each skill is a jig-saw puzzle piece, the TACT membership together should create a picture of skills.
A TACT member may have experience and expertise in any number of the examples below. For instance, a TACT member may be someone who developed curricula that uses technology (Curriculum Development 2.b) and has experience with technology security issues (Information Systems 4.c) All of the TACT members together should have experience and expertise in the following items which are neither inclusive nor exclusive:
