What is Success and Goal Attainment (SAGA)?

History

The Success and Goal Attainment committee (SAGA) evolved from the Success and Retention charter authorized in the 2000-2001 Enrollment Management Plan.

The stated purpose was to: A) coordinate success and retention efforts that are guided by informed vision, B) summarize retention efforts that have been made to date, C) understand barriers to success and retention from both a student point of view and a faculty/staff point of view, D) bring data to the developmental and decision-making process related to success and retention, E) determine criteria and target areas for success and retention efforts through an inclusive process and consistent with the College's mission and goals, F) establish the extent of college-wide and community involvement in success and retention efforts, G) identify resources that are critical in moving success and retention efforts forward, H) benchmark with other institutions, and I) glean best practices from the literature on student success, retention, and related areas.

Goals & Initiatives

In March 2002, a team from Lane participated in a seminar led by Vincent Tinto for improving retention in Community Colleges. The team returned to Lane with an action plan for the 2003-04 academic year. The action plan developed goals aimed at strengthening and coordinating retention efforts at Lane. Since 2003, SAGA has developed a strong foundation for retention and success practices and has initiated a number of projects to continually strengthen and improve Lane’s retention efforts. More specific information can be found in the SAGA Reports ('03-'04), ('04-'05), and the SAGA Unit Plan ('05-'06) (.pdf) **

"Big Ideas" - that drive student success work being done in SAGA, and to which success initiatives are connected:
1. Learning is at the heart of everything we do.
2. All students have the right to learn and succeed.
3. Everyone is responsible for helping students develop abilities to learn and succeed.
