Student Success Initiatives
Involving SAGA
Fast Lane To Success Learning Communities - Fast Lane to Success is a learning community for first year college students that was first developed in Fall 2004 with two linked classes that intensively focused on helping students develop academic and personal skills to help them succeed. It was fully enrolled and well received by the participants, and had a positive effect on their retention and success. The original two classes in Fast Laneto Success included Effective Learning and a College Success course based on Skip Downing’s On Course curriculum, an empowerment model based on active and collaborative learning and shown in many other colleges to have significant, positive impacts on retention. Fast Lane to Success expanded inFall 2005 to include three levels of Writing classes (WR95, WR115, WR121). Plans are underway to develop a section of Fast Lane to Success to include a Math class. You can learn more about Lane's learning communities by going to our website: 2011sitearchive.lanecc.edu/lc. Check out the faculty resources page for information on learning communities development and assessment. CCSSE (Lane Results) - The Community College Survey of Student Engagement was administered in Winter 2005 to assist Lane in determining its strengths and areas for improvement in engaging students. Lane results are now available! College Success: Back On Course - A class designed to assist students who did not meet Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) standards. The goal of the course is to help students get back on track to academic success and achieve good standing with Financial Aid. This class helps students learn how to address the various barriers that prevent achieving SAP and links students with campus resources. Back on course is offered as a traditional (in person) course and on-line. For more information on College Success: BOC (On-line) go to 2011sitearchive.lanecc.edu/counseling/backoncourse.html . Fall Kick-Off - A one day campus wide event, designed to equip all students and their support networks with information and resources essential to life at Lane. First Year Experience (Formerly called "FYRED UP!")- Lane faculty and staff have been developing an integrated Instruction and Student Service first year experience model based on Learning Communities and other retention and success best practice models. US News and World Report names First Year Experiences and Learning Communities as best practices for student engagement, retention and success: http://www.usnews.com/usnews/edu/college/rankings/rankacadprogs_brief.php
For more information on the FYRED UP Pilot Project, contact Mary Parthemer, parthemerm@lanecc.edu. Foundations of Excellence - In spring 2005, Lane participated in Phase I of the Foundations of Excellence project sponsored by the Policy Center on the First Year of College out of the University of South Carolina and funded by the Lumina Foundation for Education. During Phase I each participating community college (80 from across the U.S.) formed a campus Task Force to review and critique an initial draft set of Foundational Dimensions developed by the Policy Center. Feedback from this review will result in a national set of Dimensions developed specifically by and for two-year colleges. More information about Foundations of Excellence.
