Here in Oregon, we are enriched by a wide range of vibrant Native American communities.  Many members of these communities devote themselves to ensuring that the traditional cultures and values of their peoples be continually explored, strengthened, and passed on.  They do this through educational programs in their communities, as well as in public schools and in higher education.  We invite you to attend a panel comprised of a dynamic and varied selection of people who do crucial work in American Indian Education and/or in tribal cultural programs:

  • Lynn Anderson--regional Indian Education Director based in Florence
  • Allison Davis WhiteEyes--Indian Education Office based at OSU
  • David Lewis--Confederated Tribes of Grande Ronde; Manager of the Cultural Resources Department at The Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde
  • Tom Ball-- Modoc and Klamath; UO Assistant Vice Provost for Institutional Equity & Diversity
  • James Florendo--Wasco; Coordinator for Lane’s Native American Student Programs

They will be discussing the work they do, and also exploring larger questions involving the nature of cultural revitalization and recovery.  What do these terms actually mean?  In what ways should this work be pursued?  What is the varying status of cultural knowledge among the different tribes?

Eddie Little Crow (Lakota, Dakota) is a poet, former member of the American Indian Movement (AIM), and continues his work in traditional ways throughout the Northwest. As a member of the Elders Council and RED (Red Earth Descendents) in Southern Oregon, Little Crow works to keep a life in balance. He will be presenting work from a book about his life, Dreaming of a True World, A Opchine WaLa Ohkon, co-authored with antoinette nora claypoole. Talking about being Indian in a white world, the book/reading will include selections from his poetry, his history with AIM and his life lived as a Lakota--both on and off the reservation. Little Crow will talk about being Indian in a white world. His co-author, antoinette claypoole, explains: "It is best to think of him as a person coming to you to read poems, talk about surviving in these times---whether we are Indian or white. Ed has a lot to say about just staying alive, awake and present in these purification times."
