Sederlin tuned his diesel technology skills at Lane Community College

When Lane Community College diesel technology student Ryan Sederlin
won third place in a national vocational skills competition, Caterpillar
national in Illinois offered him a job. They weren't the only ones.
"After we returned from Kansas City my phone was ringing," says diesel instructor
Steve Webb. "People were trying to get hold of Ryan. They wanted to hire him."
Webb accompanied Sederlin to the SkillsUSA-VICA national vocational skills competition
sponsored by the Vocational Industrial Clubs of America and held in Kansas City,
Missouri. Lane students have won the state competitions and placed in national
competitions for the past several years.
Ryan, a native of Leaburg, chose to remain close to family and friends. He completed
the diesel tech program in fall 2003 and accepted a position with Roberts Motor
Company of Eugene in January 2004.
He enjoys his 10-hour, four-day work week as a diesel mechanic, and spends his
weekends resurrecting a 1948 Ford pickup he bought from a Brownsville farmer. "It's
gonna be a street rod," Sederlin predicts.
"Ryan is an excellent product of Lane's program," says Sean Marshall, shop foreman
at Roberts, and himself a 1993 graduate of Lane's diesel tech program. "He's
a very intelligent individual. He's a good kid, a hard worker with a good
work ethic."
Lane's program and VICA enjoy substantial industry support. For example, Willamette
Graystone, Volvo, Pape Machinery and Rexius Forest Products joined Lane's Diesel
Technology Program Advisory Committee in 2004. Other local contributors are Bi-Mart,
Cummins Northwest, Farwest Truck Center, Fluid Connector Products Inc.,
Hyster Sales, Jerry Brown Company, Lane Parts Company, Leavitts Freight,
Pacific Detroit Diesel Allison, Brattain International, Peterson Caterpillar,
Roberts Motor Company, Triad Machinery, and Tyree Oil.
