LCC President Mary Spilde appointed to state and national boards
Eugene, OR - Lane Community College President Mary Spilde recently received state and national appointments.
In July, the American Association of Community Colleges appointed Spilde to its 21st-Century Commission on the Future of Community Colleges. She is the only Oregon appointee on the 36-member commission that includes leaders from education, business, policy, and communications. The commission will examine the community college role in light of changing national needs and current economic realities. This is only the third such initiative of its kind in the 110-year history of community colleges, after the Truman Commission in 1947 and the AACC Futures Commission in 1988.
In August, Gov. John Kitzhaber appointed Spilde to the Oregon Education Investment Board. She previously served on the governor's education investment team and post-secondary education transition team. The board was established by Senate Bill 909, passed by the 2011 Legislature, to create a unified system of public education from early childhood through college to prepare all Oregonians for careers in the current and changing economy. Spilde is one of 12 board members.
Spilde has served as president of Lane Community College since August 2001. She is a national authority on community colleges, workforce development and sustainability. She has a bachelor's and law degree from the University of Edinburgh, Scotland, and a master's and doctorate from Oregon State University. She serves on numerous other boards.
