Lane ESL program relocates for the summer

EUGENE, OR - English as a Second Language daytime classes for summer 2011 will temporarily relocate to the Lane Community College Downtown Center at 10th and Willamette in Eugene while the program’s facilities on main campus get some needed much-needed attention.
Remodeling work in ESL offices and classrooms on the second floor of Building 11 will include a new roof, reorganized offices, new flooring to replace 40-year-old carpet, and making restrooms disability-accessible. Funding is provided in part by Lane’s $83 million bond approved by voters in 2008.
Up to 400 ESL students and 21 faculty and staff will be affected. The program will return to main campus on 30th Avenue for fall term.
The decision to temporarily relocate downtown was made because electrical and plumbing systems will be interrupted frequently during remodeling, and main campus classrooms are in short supply. Some other programs also affected by remodeling will be relocated to other main campus locations.
"It's difficult to pack up and move during finals week while finishing up a year, but we're looking at this as an opportunity to take advantage of summer events and activities downtown as language teaching opportunities," said Cathy Lindsley, instructional dean. "Instructors will be able to work some downtown activities into their teaching."
Transportation will be convenient since the LTD downtown bus station is right across the street from the LCC Downtown Center. ESL students qualify for the LCC bus pass.
To register for summer ESL classes, students may call (541) 463-5253 for a testing appointment. ESL summer term classes begin Tuesday, July 5. The term ends Thursday, August 25.
"It's a lot of work for faculty and staff to pack and move for a term and then move back, but it will be great to have the improvements complete when we return in the fall," Lindsley said. ESL evening classes already are held in the Downtown Center.
