EUGENE, OR– Renowned Afghan-American author Tamin Ansary will lecture at Lane Community College on Thursday, May 12, at 7:30 p.m., in the Center for Meeting and Learning, Building 19, main campus, 4000 E. 30th Avenue, Eugene. His talk is free and open to the public.
The lecture is part of Lane's Reading Together project, which engages students in reading and discussion of shared texts. Funding is provided in part by community member Jane King, a long-time supporter and patron of interdisciplinary studies at Lane. For more information about Reading Together, go online at 2011sitearchive.lanecc.edu/readingtogether/l.
Ansary will talk about his personal history, contrasting life in a highly conservative Islamic society to that in post-modern United States and explore, along the way, such thorny topics as the burqa and the position of women in Islamic society. Stories from his bi-cultural childhood illuminate how, and why, the worldview of Afghans typically differs from that of Americans. This elaborates on themes touched upon in his critically acclaimed memoir, "West of Kabul, East of New York," one of this year's Reading Together selected books.
Ansary's lecture is in addition to a separate lecture series developed by Lane this year to address recent college and community interest in exploring culture and issues connected to Islam and other religions. The Two-Year Initiative on Islam and Other Religions has brought two speakers to campus so far, Stephen Shoemaker on April 7 and Carl Ernst on March 8. A third, Kambiz GhaneaBassiri, is scheduled for May 19. For more information go online at 2011sitearchive.lanecc.edu/oasa/scholar_lectures/scholars.html
