Building 19, Lane Community College |
EUGENE, OR - Lane Community College will collect expired, unused and unwanted prescription drugs on Saturday, April 30 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., as part of the Drug Enforcement Administration's National Take Back Day.
Medications may be brought to the lobby of the Center for Meeting and Learning, Building 19, main campus, 4000 E. 30th Avenue, Eugene. Map and directions are online at 2011sitearchive.lanecc.edu/center/directions/lane.htm#map
Prescription drugs will be accepted, except for chemotherapy drugs or sharps. All liquids should be tightly closed. Lane Public Safety and Health Clinic staff will turn over collected medications to the DEA for responsible disposal.
The event is free and anonymous, no questions asked.
The DEA reports that Americans turned in 242,000 pounds, or 21 tons, of prescription drugs at similar events last year. Disposal is a vital public safety and health issue. Medicines that languish in home cabinets are susceptible to diversion, misuse and abuse. Rates of prescription drug abuse in the U.S. are high, as are the number of accidental poisonings and overdoses due to these drugs. Studies show that a majority of abused prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends, including from the home medicine cabinet. In addition, flushing medication down the toilet or throwing them in the trash pose potential safety and environmental health hazards.
Lane Community College is an equal opportunity/affirmative action institution. Visit online at 2011sitearchive.lanecc.edu or www.twitter.com/lanenews or www.facebook.com/lanecommunitycollege
