Filmmaker David Martinez at LCC March 8

EUGENE, OR - The Lane Community College Peace Center, Professional and Organizational Development Office, and Diversity Office; and the Civil Liberties Defense Center of Eugene; are excited to announce a series of events March 8, 9 and 10 with filmmaker David Martinez.

Martinez has produced documentaries in Iraq, "500 miles to Babylon," and Darfur, "Songs to Enemies and Deserts." He has contributed footage to Michael Moore's "Fahrenheit 911" and was an actor in "Waking Life." In the fall of 2010 Martinez spent several weeks living with and writing about La Policia Comunitaria, an autonomous community justice organization in Guerrero, Mexico.

Event schedule:

Tuesday, March 8, 11:30 a.m. to 12:50 p.m., LCC Longhouse, 4000 East 30th Avenue, Eugene. Martinez will screen two films on autonomous-indigenous justice in Mexico and Guatemala, "Cuando La Justicia Se Hace Pueblo/When Justice Is Made By The People," and "K'ixba'l/Verguenza/Shame," and lead a discussion.

Wednesday, March 9, 7-9p.m., Aprovoecho Stove Research Center, 79093 Hwy 99, Cottage Grove (River Road and Hwy 99). Martinez will screen his film on Darfur, "Songs to Enemies and Deserts" and facilitate a workshop on insurgent documentary filmmaking. He made this film with Shane Bauer, one of the three American hikers detained in Iran. Thursday, March 10, 7:15-9:15 p.m., David Minor Theater, 180 E. 5th Avenue (across from the 5th St Marketplace), Eugene. As part of the Civil Liberties Defense Center film night, Martinez will screen two films on autonomous/Indigenous Justice in Mexico and Guatemala, "Cuando La Justicia Se Hace Pueblo/When Justice Is Made By The People" and "K'ixba'l/Verguenza/Shame," and lead a discussion.

The admission is sliding scale of $2 to $5. No one will be turned away due to lack of funds. This event is for ages 21 and over.
