Sen. Merkley to join LCC groundbreaking March 4
EUGENE, OR – U.S. Senator Jeff Merkley will join the groundbreaking ceremonies for the new Lane Community College Downtown Campus on Friday, March 4. Events begin at 10:30 a.m. with comments in the Eugene Public Library Bascom/Tykeson Room, followed by a ceremonial dirt-tossing into the pit on the site across the street at 11:15 a.m., and a reception afterwards in the Atrium Building lobby.
Merkley will join Lane President Mary Spilde, Lane Board of Education Chair Tony McCown, Eugene Mayor Kitty Piercy, and Governor's Office Education Policy Advisor Nancy Golden for the ceremonies.
The Lane Community College Downtown Campus is regarded as a landmark project for education, business and the community. The project includes a 90,000-square-feet academic building and an 87,000-square-feet housing hall. Construction begins this month on a fast-track schedule targeting completion for fall 2012. The combined total investment is estimated at $53 million.
