EUGENE, OR - Elected officials won't dig up the dirt on Lane Community College March 4; instead, they'll sling it into the pit at 10th and Charnelton for the groundbreaking of the new Downtown Campus under the theme of Building It Together.
The event kicks off at 10:30 a.m. with comments in the Eugene Public Library Bascom/Tykeson Room, followed by dirt-tossing at 11:15 a.m. on the site across the street, and a reception afterwards in the Atrium Building lobby.
Joining Lane President Mary Spilde will be Lane Board of Education Chair Tony McCown, Eugene Mayor Kitty Piercy, and Governor's Office Education Policy Advisor Nancy Golden.

The Downtown Campus is regarded as a landmark project for education, business and the community. The campus will allow Lane to increase training and services at an accessible, convenient location while meeting sustainability goals and helping the city achieve much needed downtown revitalization. The project includes an academic building and a housing hall. The 90,000-square-feet academic building will be LEED Platinum certified. It will offer academic programs, and business services. The 87,000-square-feet housing hall will have five floors of apartment units serving up to 250 students. It will be LEED Gold certified. Construction begins in March 2011 on a fast-track schedule targeting completion for Fall 2012. The combined total investment is estimated at $53 million.
