EUGENE, OR - Acclaimed performers are coming to Eugene for Black History Month events sponsored by Lane Community College student groups and co-sponsors.

A Billie Holiday Tribute will be held Saturday, February 26, from 7-9 p.m. at Central Lutheran Church, 1857 Potter Street in Eugene. Maya Thomas will perform. Thomas is a Lane alumni and graduate of the Julliard School in New York City. After many years working in NYC and then as a company member of the Oregon Shakespeare Festival, Thomas is back to celebrate the life and music of American jazz singer and songwriter Billie Holiday. Thomas has dedicated herself to the lifework and legacy of Billie Holiday for the past 15 years. Oliver Lake will perform an introductory piece.

Oliver Lake performs Sunday, February 27 from 4-6 p.m. in the Lane Performance Hall, main campus, 4000 E. 30th Avenue in Eugene. He is an acclaimed saxophonist, composer, poet and performer. He helped establish the St. Louis Black Artists Group in the 1960s and founded the World Saxophone Quartet in 1977. His son is jazz drummer Gene Lake. The event includes an opportunity to meet and talk with Lake following the performance.
