Reese Erlich speaks at Lane Peace Center Jan. 27

EUGENE, OR - As part of its ongoing mission to "foster peace through education" to students and employees of Lane Community College and to the Eugene community, the Lane Peace Center is bringing award-winning foreign correspondent and author Reese Erlich to campus. The public is invited and encouraged to attend.

Erlich will speak on Thursday, January 27 from 1-2:30 p.m. in building 17, room 309, main campus, 4000 E. 30th Avenue, Eugene.

Erlich is touring with his new book, "Conversations with Terrorists: Middle East Leaders on Politics, Violence and Empire," in which he questions how the U.S. has dealt with terrorist threats since 2001, suggesting that by "labeling all opponents as terrorists," the government has "from a practical perspective...rendered the term 'terrorism' meaningless." Through personal interviews and new research, Erlich emphasizes the stark differences between the nihilism of al-Qaeda and the political aspirations of organizations such as Hamas and Hezbollah. He urges the U.S. to "recognize the difference between isolated fanatics and groups fighting for legitimate causes," concluding that such a policy shift would "do more to undermine groups such as al-Qaeda than all U.S. invasions combined."

Erlich's publications include "Dateline Havana," "The Iran Agenda," and the best-selling "Target Iraq" which he co-authored with Norman Solomon. He reports regularly for National Public Radio, Latino USA, and Canadian Broadcasting Corp. Radio, and writes for the San Francisco Chronicle, and Dallas Morning News.
