Grant will help low-income students in science, technology, engineering and mathematics majors
EUGENE, OR - Lane Community College has been awarded a $219,650 annual grant to assist low-income, first-generation or disabled students complete STEM programs (science, technology, engineering and mathematics). Lane is one of 12 colleges in the nation to receive the grant from the U.S. Department of Education. The award is for five years from 2010 to 2015.
Lane will use the grant to serve 120 additional students through the TRIO Student Support Services program. TRIO is a federally funded program serving about 180 at-risk students annually. Earlier this year, the program received a five-year continuation grant of $265,312 from the ED.
Services will be provided through the TRIO Student Support Services office at Lane and will include academic advising and courses in financial aid, transferring to a four-year college, and financial and economic literacy. Participants will have opportunities to explore career options through mentoring, job-shadowing and attendance at professional conferences. The program also will provide social networking opportunities for students.
Program goals are to achieve a persistence rate of 60 percent, a good academic standing rate of 65 percent, a graduation rate of 15 percent, and a graduation-transfer rate of 8 percent.
