LCC to hold watch parties for White House initiative on Hispanic education
EUGENE, OR – Lane Community College will host live community watch parties on the White House Initiative on Educational Excellence for Hispanics on Monday and Tuesday, Oct. 18 and 19, in the Center for Meeting and Learning, building 19, room 102, main campus, 4000 E. 30th Avenue, Eugene. The public is invited.
On Monday, Oct. 18, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., Lane will show the live summit at the Organization of the Americas in Washington D.C. The summit will include key leaders in the Education Department, Obama Administration, and Hispanic education, community and business leaders. They will discuss how to expand educational opportunities and improve educational outcomes for Hispanic students.
On Tuesday, Oct. 19, doors will re-open at 9:30 a.m. President Obama will sign an executive order continuing the initiative at about 10 a.m.
Lane hosted a local community discussion with initiative director Juan Sepulveda in November 2009 to gather feedback on the initiative.
The initiative was established in 1990 by President George H.W. Bush to provide advice and guidance to the secretary of education on education issues related to Hispanics and to address academic excellence and opportunities for the Hispanic community.
