Health and Wellness Center grand opening Sept. 23 at LCC

EUGENE, OR – Lane Community College celebrates the grand opening of its new Health and Wellness Center on Thursday, September 23 beginning at 4 p.m., 4000 E. 30th Avenue in Eugene. The center is located at the northwest corner of campus. The public is invited.

Speakers include Lane Community College Board of Education Chair Tony McCown, President Mary Spilde, Opening Doors Campaign Chair Tony Baker, SRG Partnership Architect Hussain Mizra, Lane Health Professions Dean Sheryl Berman, and nursing student Dave Vizcaino.

At about 4:40 p.m., Spilde, Baker and Opening Doors Campaign Honorary Co-Chairs Don Tykeson and Sister Monica Heeran will do a ribbon cutting. That will be followed by self-guided tours with some faculty and students on hand for classroom and lab demonstrations.

The center features state-of-the-art classrooms and labs for health careers training including nursing, emergency medical technician and paramedic, respiratory care, physical therapy assistant, and exercise science. A sky-bridge connects the center to buildings 4 and 5 which house dental assisting, dental hygiene, medical office assistant, health records technology, nutrition, physical education and athletics.

The center features innovations such as a rooftop "lung" that opens at night to refresh the air. The building will be LEED Gold rated for sustainability. Artwork for the center includes a 9-foot, walk-through sculpture called Living Vessel by internationally renowned artist Devin Laurence Field.

Funding for the $15.8 million, 41,700-square-foot building was provided primarily by gifts and grants from private donors to the Opening Doors campaign, Lane’s first major gifts campaign. Additional funding includes $6.75 million in state obligation bonds and $833,000 in federal appropriations.

The center broke ground on June 2, 2009. Fall term classes begin Sept. 27.
