Lane Community College and WorkSource Lane provide Brighter Futures for dislocated workers; orientation Sept. 3
EUGENE, OR - With unemployment remaining high, new hope comes in the way of the Walmart Brighter Futures Project at Lane Community College to help dislocated workers gain skills and access to training opportunities that better their chances of success in applying for and acquiring high-demand jobs.
David Wright of Eugene was laid off from his job as a construction supervisor and foreman after 15 years with the same company. Wright enrolled in Lane's worker retraining program and at the same time, he took career development workshops through Lane's Walmart Brighter Futures Project. This "helped me sort out what I want to do," and he identified drafting as his ultimate second career. So far he's held a 4.005 GPA "even though I haven't had an algebra class since 1962."
A Brighter Futures orientation will be held Friday, Sept. 3, from 10 a.m. to noon at the WorkSource Lane office in building 19, main campus, 4000 E. 30th Avenue, Eugene.
The project offers workshops in resume writing, job searches, interviewing, and discovering and marketing skills. Participants will earn National Career Readiness Certificates and the project can lead to free comprehensive career training opportunities such as Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA1) training; WorkSource Lane is accepting applications for CNA1 training through Sept. 16.
These programs are jointly funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) and Workforce Investment Act (WIA) grants administered through the Lane Workforce Partnership, as well as a Walmart Foundation grant provided through the League for Innovation in the Community College.

Lane is an equal opportunity/affirmative action institution.
