LCC one of 12 colleges to lead national Student Roadmap project
EUGENE, OR – Lane Community College is one of 12 community colleges nationwide chosen by the Association of American Colleges and Universities to lead a new initiative funded by the MetLife Foundation to improve the success of community college students. Lane is the only college in the Northwest selected for the project.
The initiative, titled "Developing a Community College Student Roadmap: From Entrance to Engagement in Educational Achievement and Success," will create academic support programs that engage and teach students from the outset how to become active partners in their own quest for educational success. The project will connect varied student support programs and create roadmaps for success that are anchored in learning outcomes essential for all students to succeed in life beyond college.
"Lane will share its best practices in student services and instruction and we will learn about other college’s best practices," says Sonya Christian, Vice President for Academic and Student Affairs. "For example, Lane recognizes that community college students are unique in that they come from a variety of backgrounds with different academic levels of preparation. By using a holistic, comprehensive approach that integrates instruction and student support services, including counseling, orientation, teaching methods, tutoring and so on, we help students complete their degree or certificate no matter what level they begin at."
Christian says the Student Roadmap project will create an opportunity for collaboration with other leading institutions and provide access to high-end research. Outcomes of the project will be made available to community colleges throughout the country.
The leadership colleges are:
- City University of New York Hostos Community College (Bronx, New York)
- City University of New York Queensborough Community College (Bayside, New York)
- Gainesville State College (Gainesville, Georgia)
