Budget plan addresses state funding reduction
EUGENE, OR – Lane Community College will address a $3.29 million budget gap this year with a variety of measures. President Mary Spilde presented the plan at the July 14 Board of Education meeting.
The gap results from a $2.6 million state funding shortfall following the governor’s 9 percent across the board cut to state budgets when economists projected a $577 million drop in state revenue; and labor settlements.
The board adopted a budget at its June meeting before the governor’s cuts were ordered. To address the new gap, the college budget—
- projects increased property tax revenue
- increases general fund contributions from bookstore and food service revenues
- projects higher enrollment and tuition revenue
- leaves vacancies unfilled
- reduces bad debt expense estimates
- reduces maintenance expense and capital outlay
- may identify program reductions later in the year if needed
The college will keep a close watch on subsequent revenue forecasts. “These changes don’t address our long term structural problems,” said Spilde. “This just gets us through next year. Given the short notice, we feel this is a reasonable plan.”
The adopted 2010/11 budget has a $90 million general fund and sets resident tuition at $83 per credit hour.
Enrollment at Lane continues to climb. Summer is expected to be up about 12 percent over last summer. It is too early to estimate fall enrollment but early registrations suggest an increase over fall last year.
Lane is an equal opportunity/affirmative action institution.
