EUGENE, Ore. - Lane Community College Foundation will host Mary Karlin, founding member and chef instructor at Ramekins Culinary School in Sonoma, Calif., as the guest chef at the annual Lane Community College Foundation Harvest Dinner. The benefit dinner and auction will be held Wednesday, Oct. 27, at the Center for Meeting and Learning on Lane's main campus, 4000 E. 30th Ave., Eugene.

Produced by Lane Community College Foundation and Lane's Culinary Arts and Hospitality Management program, the event will feature silent and oral auctions. This year's event co-chairs are Larry and Connie Hedberg and the theme is "Sharing from the Heart and Hearth." All proceeds will benefit Lane Community College students, providing scholarships and financial assistance. Through the Harvest Dinner and other fundraising efforts, the Foundation awarded $650,000 in scholarships to more than 500 students in the 2009-2010 academic year.

"We are thrilled to have Chef Mary Karlin join us for this event, which is one of the highlights of our year," says Brian Kelly, dean of the conference and culinary services division at Lane.

Karlin taught wood-fired cooking, cheese making and Mediterranean cooking classes for 10 years at Ramekins Culinary School. She also is the author of "Wood Fired Cooking" (2009, Ten Speed Press) and travels the country teaching the art of cooking. Her second book, "Making Home-Crafted Artisan Cheese," will be published in summer 2011.

"Wood-fired cooking is a passion of our students and staff, so with her great new book, Mary was a natural choice," Kelly says. "Her book has inspired us to look at wood-fired cooking in a new way. Mary brings a great vision, a wealth of knowledge, and practical teaching experience to our kitchens. We are really looking forward to working with her."

A food writer and cooking teacher, Karlin also has taught at many notable culinary venues including the Culinary Institute of America, Greystone; Rancho La Puerta resort, and Sur La Table. For more information about Chef Karlin, visit www.elementsoftaste.com
