Lane hosts national League for Innovation student literary contest
Local winners named; national judges give local reading May 21

EUGENE, OR – Lane Community College is hosting this year's national League for Innovation Student Literary Competition. As host, Lane is coordinating entries and judging, and will offer a free, public reading with the national judges.

The reading will be held Friday, May 21, at 4 p.m. in the Blue Door Theater, building 6, main campus, 4000 E. 30th Avenue, Eugene. Reading from their works will be poet Elizabeth Woody, playwright Paul Calandrino, and essayist Laurie Lynn Drummond. Also judging but not speaking at Lane is novelist Diana Abu-Jaber.

The annual competition offers contests in poetry, short story, essay, and one-act plays, open to students at League colleges. Each college holds a local contest and forwards first-place winners for national judging. National winners are announced in June and receive cash prizes plus publication in the League for Innovation student literary magazine distributed in the fall.

First-place winners at Lane Community College whose entries will be judged in the national competition are Amy Jo MacGregor for her poem, "Open Wide Your Ears;" Lindsey Butera for her short story, "Gasoline;" Chrystal Emiry for her essay, "Roots Such as These;" and Donald Ebel for his one-act play, "Lost Todd." Local entries were judged by Merry Caston, Jennifer Love, and Will Fleming, all of whom teach English at Lane.

Lane English instructor Johnnie Mazzocco is coordinating the event under the theme of "Synchronicity." For more information, contact her at (541) 463-3399 or mazzoccoj@lanecc.edu or go online at 2011sitearchive.lanecc.edu/studentlitcompetition

The League for Innovation is an international organization serving community colleges. It has more than 900 member colleges from 11 countries, including 19 board member colleges. Lane is the only board member college in Oregon.

Lane is an equal opportunity/affirmative action institution.
