EUGENE, OR - Lane Community College students Suzanne Jarvis of Eugene and ShyAnne Woods of Elmira were named Outstanding Student Scholars by the Oregon Community College Association at a ceremony earlier this month in Salem. Governor Ted Kulongoski and community college officials presented the awards. OCCA honors scholars from each of Oregon's 17 community colleges every year.
Jarvis, 43, is studying elementary education at Lane and holds a 3.448 GPA. She plans to transfer to Pacific University and someday teach special education. "I have always loved children and wanted to be a teacher," says Jarvis. "I got married at a young age and started having children right away. I didn't attend college until my oldest child had graduated from high school. I began taking classes in accounting but found that I was drawn to teaching. I spent some time exploring the medical field, and again went back to teaching. I want to be a teacher."
Woods, 21, is enrolled in the first year of Lane's new Sustainability Coordinator two-year degree program. She has a 3.1 GPA and plans to transfer to Oregon State University. She grew up in Porterville, Calif., between Fresno and Bakersfield. "At 17, I was homeless and a dropout," she says. "The 4J school district in Eugene allowed me to attend summer school for free in 2005. Later that year my family moved to Eugene where I attended South Eugene High School as a senior." At South Eugene she earned an achievement award and a $500 scholarship to attend Lane where she started out by completing her diploma. "Since attending LCC I found the resources and support I needed. LCC gave me the opportunity and confidence I needed to realize my full potential … I believe I will reach my goals and become a community leader in sustainable practices."
Lane is an equal opportunity/affirmative action institution.
