Earth Day at LCC highlights local food and connections, April 22
EUGENE, OR - This year's annual Earth Day event at Lane Community College centers on educating students, staff and faculty about sustainability efforts on campus, with particular attention to the Learning Garden and the Culinary Arts and Hospitality Management (CAHM) program.
The event is Thursday, April 22, beginning with a waste audit at 10 a.m. and an array of educational booths from various local environmentally-focused organizations, on Bristow Square in the center of campus.
The Learning Garden specialist and faculty and students from the CAHM program will offer a workshop on Growing and Cooking with Herbs at 10:30 a.m. in the northeast corner of the cafeteria, Center Building, including a cooking demonstration.
CAHM students will prepare food using local ingredients including a salad from the on-campus Learning Garden, and bread baked with wheat grown in the Willamette Valley, and serve the meal at 12 noon on Bristow Square, accompanied by a student Jazz band.
The film "Ingredients" will be shown at 11 a.m. and again at 12:30 p.m., in building 3, room 216. The film has been described as "a journey that reveals the people behind the movement to bring good food back to the table and health back to our communities."
Action moves to the Learning Garden for a planting party at 1 p.m., followed by cake and music at 3 p.m. Everyone is welcome. The garden is on at the southwest corner of campus, behind the childcare buildings. The day wraps up at 4 p.m.
More information and a full schedule for the day can be viewed at: http://2011sitearchive.lanecc.edu/sustainability/calendar.html
