EUGENE, OR – The Lane Peace Center’s third annual peace symposium, “Confronting Militarism: Democracy vs. Empire,” will be Friday, March 5, from 6-9:30 p.m., with doors opening at 5:30 p.m. The symposium will be at the Lane Community College Main Campus, Center for Meeting and Learning, Building 19. This event is open to the public.
The symposium will feature renowned activist Tom Hayden – civil rights Freedom Rider, co-founder of the Students for a Democratic Society, California legislator for 18 years, current professor of legal studies at Scripps College in Claremont, contributor to the Nation magazine, and author. His most recent book is “The Long Sixties: From 1960 to Barack Obama.” Hayden’s talk is titled “Mass Movements vs. Machiavellianism” and will focus on forming social movements in a time of war.
Other keynoters include Dr. Anita Weiss, head of the University of Oregon Department of International Studies, whose research and travels focus on Pakistan. She will speak about the current situation in Pakistan in the midst of the US War on Terror. Dr. Gwyn Kirk, a scholar-activist concerned with gender, racial and environmental justice, will address women and militarization. Northwest singer/songwriter/guitarist Jim Page will perform his music with lyrics influenced by insight and poetic conscience.
An afternoon reception with Tom Hayden, Anita Weiss, Gwynn Kirk, and Jim Page will also be held on March 5 from 2-3:30 p.m. at Cosmic Pizza, located at 8th and Charnelton in Eugene. All are welcome to come and meet the presenters.
Suggested donation for the symposium and reception is $10. No one will be turned away for lack of funds. Proceeds go directly to support the work of the Lane Peace Center.
The Lane Peace Center is founded on the understanding that peace is rooted in social, economic, political, racial and environmental justice.
