LANE'S NEW GOSPEL CHOIR GIVES FREE PERFORMANCE
Lane Community College's new Gospel Choir, under the direction of Vicki Brabham, will give its premier performance on Friday, December 4th at 3:43 pm for the season's final edition of the 343 concert series.
Brabham worked with this group of students and community members over the course of the fall term teaching them the art and history of Gospel singing.
"Yes" she said in an interview, "there is a lot of material about God and Jesus in Gospel music, but that is, after all, what it is about. It is part of America's musical heritage, so we are not shying away from that."
The students were pumped up for their first performance during a recent Thursday afternoon rehearsal. Asked if they were ready, there were shouts and high-fives reflecting the energy in the number they had just finished.
Songs will include "Help Me Lift Him Up", "Shine on Me", "Like a Mighty Stream", "Dream Keeper", and "Steal Away". A number of students from the class will be featured in solos, including Alison Sachs, Jodi Tomlinson, and Karen Clark. The performance will also feature the reading of a number of poems written by African-American poets.
The 343 concert series is a free event held most Fridays during the school term at 3:43 in the afternoon in room 121 of the Performance Hall, Building 6 on the Main Campus.
