![]() |
Eugene, Ore. - Lane Community College will offer a free, hands-on class, "Revitalizing a Lost Art: Splitting Planks," taught by Don Day of the Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde, on Friday and Saturday, July 17 and 18, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., at the longhouse, main campus, 4000 E. 30th Avenue, Eugene.
Students will learn how to cut planks from raw timber using traditional technologies and tools of wood, bone and antler. The planks made in the class will be used in the LCC longhouse.
Day has a bachelor's degree in anthropology from the University of Oregon where he is pursuing a master's. He is working to revive the lost art of traditional cedar plank splitting among Pacific Northwest tribes. His expertise working with Western red cedar is extensive and his work can be found in museums and structures throughout the Northwest.
Participants should bring work gloves and lunch. The class is the second of a two-part series but anyone may attend, and attend part or all of the class.
The longhouse, currently under construction, will be open for tours during the class.
