MATH SKILLS FAIR ADDS UP TO FUN, OPPORTUNITIES FOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS

Eugene, Ore. - The Annual Math Skills Fair at Lane Community College will be held Wednesday, April 15. The fair attracts about 150 students from 10 to 15 high schools around the county.

The half-day fair begins at 9 a.m. in building 17, room 309, with Solve that Problem, a game show format event, followed by a written quiz. A relay follows at about 11:15 a.m. on the Bristow Square lawn north of the Center building. The top scoring teams receive ribbons. The top scoring individuals on the geometry through calculus quizzes will be invited to the 29th Annual Oregon Invitational Mathematics Tournament, to be held Saturday, May 9 at the University of Oregon.

Lane’s Mathematics Division hosts this fair annually to promote the joy of studying mathematics and to offer local high school students the opportunity to qualify for the state math contest. "This is a fun day for everyone involved," says fair director and math instructor Steve Selph. "We really enjoy working with the local high school teachers and students, and it's a great opportunity for us to promote Lane's math and science programs as well."
