Andrea Russell and Jeremy Soriano |
Eugene, Ore. - Lane Community College students Andrea Russell of Springfield and Jeremy Soriano of Eugene have been named 2009 Oregon Community College Association Student Scholars.
They will join students from Oregon’s other community colleges for an awards ceremony with the governor and a luncheon program on Wednesday, April 15, in Salem. Soriano is one of three students from the 17 colleges who will speak at the luncheon program.
Soriano, 20, is a biology major and avid surfer. “I consider myself lucky to have my personal and career interests complement each other,” he says. Originally from Hawaii, he is a Surfrider Foundation volunteer and helps monitor Northwest marine health by cleaning beaches and testing water samples. He has a 3.818 GPA and tutors biology students. He plans to complete a degree in secondary education biology at the University of Oregon.
Russell, 31, is an Air Force veteran and mother of three. She is a math major with a 4.203 GPA. She tutors math students and has put her skills to work in cooperative education math practicums at Lane and Thurston High School. “I love to be there when math concepts click for the students,” she says. She will transfer to the University of Oregon next fall to finish a degree in secondary education math.
Lane is an equal opportunity/affirmative action institution.
