LANE PRESIDENT AND STUDENT PARTICIPATE IN CLINTON GLOBAL INITIATIVE
Eugene, Ore. - Lane Community College President Mary Spilde and student Toby Kubler attended the Clinton Global Initiative Meeting at the University of Texas at Austin on February 13-15. The meeting featured solutions to global issues and implementation at the local level.
In 2007, President Clinton established the Clinton Global Initiative University (CGI U) to engage young leaders worldwide in participating in the development and implementation of solutions to pressing community issues. The annual gathering brings together university presidents, national youth organizations and nongovernmental organization and provides a forum where they can interact and take steps in developing specific commitments for addressing issues on their campuses and communities. The five focus areas of CGI include: education, energy and climate change, global health, peace and human rights, and poverty alleviation.
Kubler is working on a project that will result in creating a working garden as a permanent feature on Lane’s main campus. He said the meeting was a great experience. “Seeing the impact and commitments other young people from around the world is inspiring.” Lane currently has 2,000 square feet of garden space for food production and Kubler already has put in his request to double the space.
Spilde said, “Seeing the commitment of young people like Toby making such a positive contribution in the community and on our campus sends a powerful message that each one of us can do something to make a difference.”
Lane is an equal opportunity/affirmative action institution.
