Six Gifts Totaling $6,375,000 Kick off Lane Community College Capital Campaign
Eugene, Ore. - The Lane Community College Foundation has received $6,375,000 from six donors to launch the public phase of its Opening Doors Campaign. These influential people have all made very significant gifts to Lane because they believe this is a huge opportunity for our community to become a leader in nursing and health care education. They hope that their investments will provide inspiration and leadership to others in the community to join this coordinated effort to expand educational offerings for students of LCC’s nursing, respiratory care, physical therapy and other health care programs.
More than $16 million needs to be raised locally to meet the campaign total of $23 million to fund four initiatives: a new Health and Wellness Center, a faculty endowment, a scholarship endowment, and a fund for innovation. An additional $6.75 million will come from the state as matching funds for the new building which will provide classroom and laboratory space for these vital health care programs.
Mary Spilde, Lane's president, is thrilled with the impressive gifts received for the campaign. She pointed out that the theme, Opening Doors, is especially appropriate given that the commitments of the initial six donors will open many doors for students.
Through funds raised by the Sacred Heart Medical Center Foundation, PeaceHealth Oregon Region has pledged $1,875,000, with $1,375,000 allocated for i nstruction of nursing and other health science students and $500,000 committed to the Health and Wellness Center. "The Sacred Heart Medical Center Foundation raised these funds to further the mission of the hospital by supporting nursing education at Lane Community College," says Rueben Mayes, the foundation’s executive director. According to PeaceHealth Oregon Region CEO Mel Pyne, a partnership with Lane Community College helps ensure the training of high quality health care professionals needed to serve the community through outstanding instruction and educational facilities.
$1.5 million for the Health and Wellness Center came from the John and Robin Jaqua Fund of the Oregon Community Foundation. Robin Jaqua has long been an advocate of nursing education and supported efforts to develop new statewide curriculum in the past. She feels that it is critical that health care providers are educated with a holistic approach to medicine and patient treatment. Her support of the new Health and Wellness Center at Lane Community College will provide the necessary new environment for enhancing student education to meet the huge demand for properly trained nurses, both locally and regionally.
The Rosaria P. Haugland Foundation provided $1 million for the Health and Wellness Center. Rosaria Haugland was the first donor to commit funds over a year ago to commence fund raising for the center. She is a long-time supporter of scholarships for Lane Community College students as well as a supporter of Lane arts programs. She is a member of the Opening Doors Leadership Team and the Lane Community College Foundation board.
Also committing $1 million to the campaign are Don and Willie Tykeson through the Tykeson Family Charitable Trust. Tykeson is an honorary chair of the campaign and has supported Lane in the past with contributions for scholarships, the art gallery and other areas of greatest need. He has been a tireless advocate for the campaign as a member of the Opening Doors Leadership Team.
Two $500,000 gifts were also received. Cart and Joy Woodard, who have been involved with Lane Community College since its inception, committed their gift for the Health and Wellness Center. They have supported student scholarships for Lane students from the Cottage Grove area since the very beginning of the college's scholarship program, and Cart Woodard served on the Foundation Board of Trustees for many years.
Doug McKay committed $500,000 to the campaign for the Health and Wellness Center and has contributed to other Lane projects for over 20 years.
An additional 317 donors have contributed $2,302,476 to the campaign to date.
