EUGENE, OR - The Lane Community College Foundation has launched its "Opening Doors" campaign to raise nearly $23 million for critical community needs that are being addressed by Lane Community College. Tony Baker, editor and publisher of The Register- Guard newspaper, has been named campaign chair, while Sister Monica F. Heeran, retired CEO of PeaceHealth and executive founder of Volunteers in Medicine, and Don Tykeson, founder of Tykeson/ Associates Enterprises, are the campaign's honorary co- chairs. Other leadership team members are Dr. Terry Carter, Dottie Chase, Peter Davidson, Dave Frosaker, Rosaria Haugland, Ada Lee and Sue Prichard.

The "Opening Doors" campaign will help Lane respond to the growing local and national shortage of nurses and other health professionals that will affect the quality of patient care in the next few years. The four initiatives for which the "Opening Doors" campaign will provide funding are: a new Health and Wellness Center on Lane's main campus in Eugene; an endowment to hire additional faculty; a scholarship endowment; and the President's Fund for Innovation.

Mary Spilde, president of Lane, said these initiatives will help the college improve the supply of nurses for the area, provide scholarships for deserving students in a variety of fields, and develop a fund for emerging technology programs. Spilde also pointed out that these efforts are separate from the recently passed bond issue that is designed to help Lane upgrade its existing facilities over the next 15 years.

With an estimated cost of $15 million, the proposed new Health and Wellness Center will provide the necessary space to expand nursing and other health care career programs. The state legislature has approved $6.75 million in matching funds for the center. The college's $6.75 million match, plus an additional $1.5 million, needs to be raised in the "Opening Doors" campaign.

The scholarship endowment of $3 million will help more than 150 students with their college expenses at LCC, and an endowment of $3 million for faculty chairs will ensure expansion of nursing and other programs. Finally, the $1.5 million Fund for Innovation will be used to finance emerging technology programs.

To kick off the "Opening Doors" campaign, the Lane Foundation board raised nearly $1.3 million from its members, with 100 percent of the board participating. The chairs of that campaign were Baker and Larry Hedberg, senior vice president and managing director of U.S. Bank.

Assisting the leadership team are Janet Anderson, executive director of the Lane Community College Foundation; Michele Erickson, donor relations officer; and Barbara Enright, fundraising
assistant.
