EARTHY EVENTS EDUCATE STUDENTS AND PUBLIC AT LCC
Learning Garden tours open to public and conference attendees

EUGENE, Ore. - Learning Garden tours and a work party are open to the public this week at Lane Community College. Tours will be held Wednesday, April 16, from 4-5:30 p.m. and Thursday, April 17, from 12-1 p.m. A work party follows on Friday, April 18, from 12-p.m.-sunset. The garden is located on the southwest corner of campus behind buildings 24-26 (childcare).

The garden is used by the student Learning Garden Club and as an outdoor classroom for Introduction to Sustainability classes. The produce goes to the campus cafeteria and culinary arts programs.

Attendees of this week’s National Sustainability Conference are invited on Wednesday’s tour. The conference is all day Wednesday and Thursday, April 16 and 17, in the Center for Meeting and Learning, building 19. Geared to community college faculty, administrators, and students, the conference offers strategies for infusing sustainability into curriculum, college operations, student life, and other activities. Speakers are Denis Hayes, environmental activist and coordinator of the first national Earth Day; Dr. Rusty Stephens, president of Wilson Community College in Wilson, North Carolina, a recognized leader in the sustainability movement; and Dr. Mary Spilde, president of Lane Community College, who has positioned Lane as a leader of sustainability practices and education. The public may register online at http://2011sitearchive.lanecc.edu/sustainability/conferences.html
