EUGENE - The Eugene-Lane Branch of the American Association of University Women has established the AAUW Kappy Eaton Scholarship Fund with the Lane Community College Foundation. The fund will create an ongoing endowment for a woman LCC graduate who is transferring to a four-year university or college.

Women earn 66 percent of degrees and certificates at Lane, according to recent research. Women comprise 56 percent of Lane credit students.

The scholarship honors the many contributions Kappy Eaton has made to AAUW, nationally and locally, in advancing equity in education for women and girls. Eaton is a life member of AAUW and past branch president.

Now in her 80s, Eaton continues to serve as the Eugene-Lane branch public policy chair and is an active member of AAUW's State Public Policy Committee. When the Oregon Legislature is in session, she commutes to Salem four days a week to advocate for issues near and dear to AAUW women and the League of Women Voters.

In 1997, the University of Oregon honored her with a Distinguished Service Award, citing her roles in founding the Oregon Women's Rights Coalition and her involvement in Lane County League of Women Voters. Eaton has two master's degrees from University of Oregon.

AAUW Branch President Peggy Shippen said the branch has already raised $6,000 with a goal of raising another $4,000 by June 1, and an additional $7,500 in 2009 and 2010. Once funded, the scholarship will provide one $1,800 scholarship for an LCC woman graduate to further her studies.

Tax-deductible contributions can be made directly to the LCC Foundation with a note indicating it is for AAUW Kappy Eaton Scholarship Fund. Contributions can also be made through the local AAUW branch with a check made payable to the Lane Community College Foundation and sent to AAUW Treasurer Ardith Hinman, 236 Greenvale Drive, Springfield OR 97477.

Lane Community College is an affiliate member of AAUW, a nationwide network of more than 100,000 members and 500 college and university partners. AAUW promotes equity for all women and girls, lifelong education and positive societal change.
