"EYES WIDE OPEN" EXHIBIT ON THE COSTS OF WAR COMING TO LCC APRIL 3-4

EUGENE - The Lane Peace Center will present "Eyes Wide Open Oregon: The Human and Economic Cost of War," on Thursday and Friday, April 3 and 4, from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. with a closing ceremony from 4-5 p.m. both days, in the Center Building cafeteria and Bristow Square, at Lane Community College main campus in Eugene, 4000 E. 30th Avenue.

"Eyes Wide Open Oregon" is a multi-media exhibit that appeals to the heart and explores the true impact of the war.

Sponsored by the American Friends Service Committee, Rural Organizing Project, Military Families Speak Out, and Veterans for Peace Chapter 72, the exhibit traveled to 26 Oregon communities and colleges in 2007.

Elements of the exhibit:

  • A memorial to the fallen that includes 102 pairs of combat boots for each Oregon soldier, killed in Iraq, with their name, age and hometown and small photo. Some now have more photos, letters, etc. from family and friends.
  • "Dreams and Nightmares" memorial with more than 300 shoes, 28 2ft. x 3 ft. displays on 14 easels with photos, and stories and statistics about the cost of war to Oregon and the impact of the occupation on Iraqis.
  • Display of 3,300 plus 9" x 9" flags with names of American soldiers killed in Iraq since beginning of the war.
  • Hard hats to represent Oregon contractors killed in Iraq.
  • National Priorities Project: A monitor on their website shows real-time by the minute Federal spending on the war.
  • Videos from Military Families Speak Out Oregon, Recruiter Watch and the "Eyes Wide Open" National Exhibit.

The "Eyes Wide Open" exhibit is a companion event to a visit from Louise Steinman, author of this year's Reading Together selection at Lane. Steinman will read, lecture and discuss her latest book, "The Souvenir: A Daughter Discovers Her Father's War," on April 3 and 4. This year's Reading Together theme is, War, Loss & Reconciliation.
