EUGENE, OR - Lane Community College will host a national conference on sustainability for community colleges on April 16 and 17 in the Center for Meeting and Learning, building 19, main campus in Eugene.
The conference will present best practices and other information about the community college role in sustainability in areas such as workforce training, business development, curriculum, student life, facilities, planning, and food services. Designed for faculty, staff, administrators, and students, about 300 people are expected to attend. The public is welcome to register.
Dr. Mary Spilde, president of Lane Community College, will present opening remarks. Spilde has led Lane to a position of national prominence in the sustainability movement. Under her leadership, Lane established a sustainability program in 2004. The following year, she signed the international Talloires Declaration, a plan for environmental literacy and sustainability in education. She is a charter signatory to the American College and University Presidents Climate Commitment and serves on its Leadership Circle. Most recently, Spilde guided the development of a sustainability core value for Lane, which was unanimously approved by the college's board in 2007.
Keynote speakers are Denis Hayes and Dr. Rusty Stephens. Hayes was national coordinator of the first Earth Day and was selected by Time magazine in 1999 as one of its 100 Heroes for the Planet. He has won awards from the Sierra Club, National Wildlife Federation, Natural Resources Council of America, American Solar Energy Society, and the Humane Society of the United States. Dr. Stephens is president of Wilson Community College in Wilson, NC, and a recognized leader in the sustainability movement.
