AUTHOR LOUISE STEINMAN TO VISIT LANE COMMUNITY COLLEGE

EUGENE, OR - Louise Steinman, author of this year's Reading Together selection at Lane Community College,"The Souvenir: A Daughter Discovers Her Father's War," will visit campus and other Eugene locations on April 3 and 4 for a series of readings, lectures and discussions. Steinman's memoir is about her discovery of her father's WWII letters and a troubling souvenir. These discoveries propel her into a journey involving the lasting impacts of war, and the possibilities of reconciliation and forgiveness. The college reading project's theme is “War: Loss, Survival, and Reconciliation.”

All events are free and open to the public:

Thursday April 3:

  • 10 a.m.-12 p.m., presentation, reading, Q&A, and booksigning at the Center for Meeting and Learning, Building 19, Rooms 102-103, LCC main campus.
  • 2-3:30 p.m., informal discussion and booksigning, Center for Meeting and Learning, Building 19, Rooms 102-103, LCC main campus.
  • 7:30 p.m., reading at Tsunami Books, 2585 Willamette, Eugene.

Friday, April 4:

  • 10 a.m.-12 p.m., panel discussion with LCC student veterans, Center for Meeting and Learning, Building 19, Rooms 102-103, LCC main campus.
  • 7:30 p.m., multicultural panel discussion about social inequities, Many Nations Longhouse, University of Oregon campus.

Steinman curates the nationally recognized ALOUD literary series at the Los Angeles Public Library, serves as co-director of the Los Angeles Institute of the Humanities at the University of Southern California, and was senior creative advisor for the Sundance Institute's Arts Writing Program from 1999-2003. She also wrote, "The Knowing Body: The Artist as Storyteller in Contemporary Performance."

“The Souvenir”* won the ForeWorld Magazine gold medal in autobiography/memoir. The book was a featured selection of the Literary Guild, Traditions Book Club, and Book of the Month Club.
