LCC BOARD MAY APPROVE NEW DEGREE AND CERTIFICATE PROGRAMS

EUGENE - The Lane Community College Board of Education meets Wednesday, February 13, at 6:30 p.m. in the boardroom, building 3, 4000 E. 30th Avenue, Eugene. A public hearing will be called at about 6:45 p.m. to allow for public comment on using the Construction Management/General Contractor (CM/GC) method for the Health and Wellness building project. After the hearing, regular session will reconvene.

Agenda highlights:

• Physical Therapist Assistant Program: The board will be asked to approve a new associate of applied science degree to begin fall 2008. Physical therapist assistants help patients learn how to exercise and recover physical activity after accident or illness. They teach patients how to use wheelchairs, crutches, canes and walkers. Coursework will include on-site experience in health care facilities. There is only one other approved Physical Therapist Assistant program in Oregon, at Mt. Hood Community College in Gresham. Salaries average $41,000 locally.

• Truck Driver Certificate: The board will be asked to approve a curriculum and Career Pathways certificate to begin fall 2008. Students will learn to drive a tractor-trailer combination or a large truck and will qualify for the commercial drivers license exam. Graduates will be able to continue on in Lane’s Diesel Technology program, and current diesel students will be able to qualify for a commercial drivers license. Oregon has 717 truck driver job openings annually, including 64 in Lane County. Local wages average $31,800. Pending retirements are expected to create a truck driver shortage.
