LCC CULINARY STUDENTS TO SERVE HOMELESS

Eugene, Ore. – Students from Lane Community College’s Culinary Arts and Hospitality Management program will be volunteering their food service skills to help the homeless. About 30 students will be preparing and serving food for hundreds of guests at this year’s Project Homeless Connect for Lane County event set for Thursday, Feb. 7, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., at the Lane Events Center at the Fairgrounds.

In partnership with food collections from Food for Lane County and area restaurants, students will be serving up everything from omelets to hamburgers.
“This is not only a way for students to apply their skills at a large-scale event, but it’s a way to give back to the community,” said Clive Wanstall, Lane Community College chef and instructor.

Area restaurants are giving back as well, including a major food donation from Adam’s Place restaurant again this year.

“The event has been the most rewarding community service event that I have been connected with,” said Adam Bernstein of Adam’s Place restaurant. “Everyone involved takes a personal and hands on approach, the end result; lives saved and changed for the better.”

The event invites people who are living on the street, in temporary shelters, or at risk of becoming homeless, to come and seek services and get basic needs met, from free medical and eye exams to hot meals and haircuts.

Volunteers of all skill levels are still needed to assist with the event. Volunteers can register at www.homelessconnect.org ( http://www.homelessconnect.org/ ). For more information, contact Sophia McDonald, PHC coordinator, at (541) 682-3770.
