EUGENE - "Buying Time," a play by Michael Weller of New York, is the story of the turmoil that erupts when a law firm that champions environmental causes comes under pressure from corporate developers. It is based on a true event witnessed firsthand by the playwright at an Arizona law firm. Weller is a world-renowned playwright who wrote the play, “Moonchildren," and the screenplays for "Ragtime" and "Hair." Weller will be on hand opening night on Friday, February 1, for a discussion after the performance.
"Buying Time" is filled with passionate and colorful characters. Weller has spiced the story with a looming scandal, and with his trademark, witty dialogue. People of the “green” generation will recognize the soul-searching challenges of the lawyers in the play, who are caught between their personal ideals, for which they undertake pro bono cases, and their finances. Says one character: “I don't care about pro bono. It's church work. You gotta choose—a BMW or the holy stigmata, not both. I like making money. I really do. That's what I like."
Lane Student Production Association, after considering numerous plays for the winter production, chose “Buying Time” for its relevance to the community and its timeliness.
“Buying Time” will be held in the Blue Door Theatre, building 6, main campus in Eugene, 4000 E. 30th Avenue. Curtain time is 8 p.m. on February 1, 2, 7-10, and 14-16. A Sunday matinee on February 10 starts at 2 p.m.
Tickets are $10 general admission; $8 seniors, students, and Lane staff. On Thursdays, all tickets are $8. Tickets may be purchased at the door or reserved by phone at 463-5761. The play is recommended for mature audiences.
