Norman Solomon speaks on "Made love, got war" in Eugene

EUGENE - Activist and media critic Norman Solomon speaks about his new book, "Made Love, Got War: Close Encounters with America's Warfare State" at two events in Eugene on Thursday, November 15.

At 1 p.m. Solomon will address Lane Community College faculty, staff and students in Building 17 (Forum), Room 308, main campus in Eugene, 4000 E. 30th Avenue. Admission is free and open to the public.

At 7 p.m. excerpts from "War Made Easy," the new film narrated by Sean Penn and based on Solomon's previous book by the same title, will precede his talk in the University of Oregon Law School, Room 175, 1515 Agate Street. Admission is on a sliding scale from $5 to $25. Doors open at 6:30 p.m., and seating is limited.

Cosponsors are the newly formed Lane Peace Center; the Associated Students of Lane Community College; Eugene Media Action, a Committee of Eugene PeaceWorks; UO Wayne Morse Center for Law and Politics; and Eugene Weekly.

Solomon has written 12 books including "War Made Easy: How Presidents and Pundits Keep Spinning Us to Death." A nationally syndicated columnist on media and politics, he is the founder and executive director of the Institute for Public Accuracy. His book "Target Iraq: What the News Media Didn't Tell You," co-authored with foreign correspondent Reese Erlich, has been translated into five languages.

In his foreword to "Made Love, Got War: Close Encounters With America's Warfare State," Daniel Ellsberg writes that the book "helps us understand where we are now and how we got here." The "Pentagon Papers" whistleblower concludes. "I was born in 1931, and my generation had to reorient itself to the unprecedented threat of planetary nuclear suicide-murder. Norman Solomon was born 20 years later, and his generation has never lived under any other circumstance. The strands of this book form a unique weave of personal narrative and historical inquiry. "Made Love, Got War lays out a half-century of socialized insanity that has brought a succession of aggressive wars under cover of - but at recurrent risk of detonating - a genocidal nuclear arsenal. We need to help each other to awaken from this madness." Solomon concludes that passivity is not a viable option, and neither is acceptance of the warfare state: "If we want a future that sustains life, we'd better create it ourselves."
