President Mary Spilde to co-chair state education commission
EUGENE, OR - Dr. Mary Spilde, president of Lane Community College, was appointed to co-chair Oregon’s Postsecondary Quality Education Commission created by executive order of the governor on August 28. The other co-chair is Oregon State University President Ed Ray.
“This group will do significant work in forecasting and should level the playing field for community college funding in the legislative process,” said Spilde. “It is good for Lane and will put us in a position to influence the direction of this group and hopefully how we get funded in the future.”
The order directs the commission to create a quality education model for postsecondary education for the governor’s use in developing the 2009-11 recommended budget. The commission is directed to address the needs of community college and university students; study the impact of the use of part-time faculty and graduate students; identify key values for higher education such as quality and career education; solicit input; consider research and data; and communicate with stakeholders as work proceeds.
A second executive order directs the state Department of Administrative Services to update the revenue forecasting process for establishing the essential budget level for the community college support fund.
